Our Aim
We keep rules to a minimum and make adults
and children aware of them, in order to achieve acceptable
behaviour whilst respecting confidentiality at all times.
Our Rules
1. No toys or dressing-up clothes on the
climbing frame.
2. Keep the sand or water in the sandpit /
water tray and play dough on the play dough table.
3. No shouting or screaming.
4. No fighting or making guns.
5. No running round the equipment in
circles.
We positively encourage kind, polite and
helpful behaviour and respect for each child’s individual
needs, culture, race and beliefs. The same applies to adult
helpers. Shouting, swearing, sarcasm, hitting or disrespect for
a child’s individuality have no place in the mobile
crèche.
Equal Opportunities Policy Statement
1. We recognise that our mobile
crèche may be multiracial, multicultural and
multilingual.
2. We recognise that we have a duty to
provide positive teaching regarding equal opportunities.
3. A child’s name is a crucial part
of his / her identity. It is important that we use the
child’s correct name and pronunciation.
4. One of our fundamental aims is to build
on and expand the experiences of all the children in the mobile
crèche. This includes providing a friendly environment,
learning materials, resources and opportunities with which
children are familiar and can identify with, encouraging them
to use them in ways appropriate to their experiences.
5. We recognise that bilingualism and
bi-dialectism is a positive asset.
6. Dietary restrictions and preferences
will be respected, and staff aim to be open and aware of
diverse eating styles, habits and customs.
7. Staff selection criteria and procedures
will be kept under review. All employees will be given equal
opportunities for promotion and appropriate training.
8. The Staff and Management, by a
continual process of discussion, through sharing of
information, through taking part in training programmes and
other means of education, will continually re-evaluate our
approaches and policies in working towards providing the best
environment for the children in the mobile crèche.
Racist Incidents
Children who are subjected to name calling
and other insults because of their colour or physical
appearance need support. Racial insults hurt. Care should be
exercised when dealing with such incidents so that the victim
is not punished for retaliating while the perpetrator of the
original insult is free to repeat the offence.
1. Act immediately when a racial incident
takes place.
2. Strongly criticise the racist behaviour
and make clear to children that it is NOT acceptable.
3. Try to determine how much of their
behaviour they understand.
4. Offer clear support to the child who
has been insulted or rejected and do not criticise him / her
for showing anger.
5. Be firm yet positive with the child who
is insulting and help the children to settle any non-racial
part of their argument.
6. Do not side step the issue with a
response such as “All people are alike” or
“Colour does not matter”. Such statements just deny
the obvious differences.
7. Do not let the subject drop. Discuss
such incidents with the parents and staff so that ideas can be
shared and parents will reinforce the mobile
crèche’s anti-racist practices in the home.
8. Help black children to realise that
negative responses to their appearance or language are due to a
racist society, not their shortcomings
9. Remember racial insults hurt adults
too.
Special Needs Policy
We are committed to the integration of
children with special needs within our mobile crèche,
and will seek proper resourcing to make this successful. We
will therefore:
1. Ensure that all children have full
access to the play opportunities within the mobile
crèche.
2. Encourage and facilitate discussion
about disability to try to ensure that children within our
mobile crèche adopt attitudes that will help combat
discrimination against people with disabilities within the
wider community.
3. We will seek out resources, for
example, books, posters, jigsaw's, etc., which portray positive
images of people with disabilities.
4. Ensure that attitudes and language that
devalue or discriminate against people with disabilities will
be challenged.
5. Our key-worker system and high adult
/child ratio ensures that each child receives plenty of adult
time and attention. If we find that a child needs additional
support, after consultation with the parent and agreement of
the mobile crèche’s management, we will endeavour
to provide the appropriate support.
6. We welcome the opportunity to work with
other professionals in order to meet children’s specific
needs.
7. Our staff will attend whenever
possible, in-service training on special needs.
Setting Goals and Boundaries
1. Assure the children that they will all
have an opportunity to play with all the equipment.
2. It is important for staff to be aware
of any major outside events which may influence the behaviour
of the child and parents / carers are encouraged to inform
staff if these are likely to affect their child’s
behaviour.
3. Enhance children’s self-esteem
and self-confidence.
4. The adults have a crucial role to play
in showing respect for self and others in providing a model of
behaviour which they wish to encourage among the children, for
example, saying “please” and “thank
you”.
5. Introduce games and activities that
encourage sharing and taking turns.
6. The child with disabilities or learning
difficulties may show behaviour characteristics of much younger
children and will be given support and encouragement.
7. It is not acceptable for adults to
shout across the room and humiliate children, use physical
punishment or bad language.
8. So that children may learn how far they
can go, mild, consistent and logical discipline is necessary to
a child’s security as it is to his life. It may be
administered by a glance, a word or a tone of voice.
Handling Conflict
1. Staff agree about the approach and are
consistent in their own behaviour and implementation of the
policy.
2. Rules are explained to children, adults
and members of staff. Reasons are given for this and are
reviewed at regular intervals.
3. Many conflicts can be avoided by good
practice, such as,
a) when setting out dough activity, ensure
that for each seated child, sufficient dough is available,
b) if a limited amount of equipment /
resource is available for an activity, reduce the number of
children able to participate at any one time,
c) identify equipment which normally
causes conflict and appoint a named member of staff to
supervise the activity.
Dealing with Conflict
When children are full of anger, it is
most important to listen to both sides of the argument. It is
more important for the situation to be calmed down and for the
children to know they have been listened to, rather than the
adult spending time trying to get the child / children to say
sorry. The children should be encouraged to seek a solution to
the issue themselves.
The issue must be defined.
a) What is the issue?
b) Ask the children to look for a solution
and help them to see how the solution could work, bringing in
all points of view.
c) Help them to put the plan into
practice. The staff should keep an eye on the situation, to
make sure it is resolved, by working closely together.
d) If necessary, the staff member should
offer words that may help the child to know what he / she is
feeling.
